About the Artist

Connie

I'm Connie Davey, I'm an Asian/Caribbean American illustrator based in Austin TX. In my illustration work I like to capture things that spark a story for me in the things I experience. Recently my time has been taken with creating the Noktpapilio comic. When I'm not working on the comic, I spend a lot of time absorbing other stories via movies, books, and games. I also love exploring Austin by bike, cooking, and testing new recipes.

I also have a studio assistant, Thane. His responsibilities consist of catching sunbeams, puking at my feet whenever I start to feel too confident, and knocking things over before morale gets too high.

About the Comic

I started creating this comic for myself because I didn't find the kind of story that I wanted to hear. I wanted a story that echoed my experiences with alienation, failure and how those things influenced my view of myself. I wanted to hear a story about how it's possible to overcome those things, and how the transformation that takes place isn't always what we expected, but that doesn't make the change any less valuable. I hope I've also created something that is enjoyable and entertaining to read.

Noktpapilio, or Nokt for short is an alienated Woman who lives in an alternate 80's world. Between the isolation and creeping depression, she attempts to end her life when it becomes too much. Instead she ends up in a bronze age world as a cat-like animal with shapeshifting abilities. This world is not a magical escapes, and instead proves to be just as alienating and comes with newopportunities for failure. While she doesn't get away from her problems, she gets a second chance at dealing with it in a different way.

Along the way she meets an amphibious merman, a ghost with psychic powers, and a rogue necromancer who are all dealing with their own alienation and failures. She will have to transform (literally and figuatively) if she wants to get home.

Some of my influences include Morrowind, the Earthsea series, Conan the barbarian, and 80s and 90's anime
